Truck Involved In Double Fatal Had Broken Brakes

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- Maryland State Police say a tractor-trailer involved in a double fatality in Frederick County was operating with broken brakes and without a state commercial vehicle registration certificate.

The Frederick News-Post reported Wednesday that police say three of the 10 brakes on the truck registered to Noble Enterprise Transport LLC of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., were nonfunctional. Police say three other brakes were out adjustment.

Construction workers Hector Henriquez of Gaithersburg and Jose Diaz of Derwood died when the truck carrying oranges overturned onto their pickup truck on Route 75 Monday.

Tractor-trailer driver Watson Pierre of Sunrise, Fla., is charged with two counts of criminally negligent manslaughter and two traffic violations. He's being held at the Frederick County jail with bail set at $100,000.

His trial is set for Jan. 22.
