Court OKs Settlement Of Public Housing Dispute
BALTIMORE (AP) -- A 17-year-long dispute alleging that Baltimore and a federal agency created and continued a racially segregated system of public housing has been settled.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development says a federal judge in Baltimore approved the settlement in Thompson v. HUD.
The settlement will allow the continuance of a mobility program that helps families to move from poor areas of Baltimore to mixed-income neighborhoods in the city and surrounding region.
HUD will also seek to provide incentives for private housing developers to include affordable units for families when FHA insured market-rate developments are built.
