Driver In Fatal Crash Gets Jail, Home Detention

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- A woman who was driving on a learner's permit and caused a fatal crash has been sentenced to jail and home detention.

Elizabeth Ramirez, 20, of Millersville was sentenced to six months in jail, followed by six months home detention on Monday.

Ramirez had been convicted of negligent manslaughter in the July 2011 accident that killed Javaid Firdaus, 63, of Glen Burnie.

Prosecutors said Ramirez gave three friends a ride and was waiting for a red left turn arrow to turn green. Authorities say Ramirez thought the light had turned green and turned into the path of a taxi driven by Firdaus.

The Capital of Annapolis reports that Ramirez apologized to Firdaus' family in court.
