Former Maryland Basketball Coach Lefty Driesell

The news is everywhere.  Maryland is headed to the Big Ten.  The university cited financial issues as the main reason for the move.  Legendary Maryland basketball coach Lefty Driesell said, "I think it's ludicrous!"  Coach Driesell is of the mindset that college athletics is not a business, but a sport.

"Basketball is supposed to be for the students," Coach Driesell reasoned. "Maryland in the last three or four years, that's all they're about is money.  They do away with sports.  It's all money, the whole university is built around money.  How do the other schools in the ACC pay they're bills?  Maryland's got 35,000 students paying the athletic fee.  Duke only has but 10,000 and doesn't draw anything for football, how are they doing it?  The fundraisers aren't working.  The President should be raising more money.  I don't see why Maryland can't run an athletic program on the student fees and what the Terrapin club raises and so forth."
