Baltimore Announces School Closing Plan

BALTIMORE (AP) -- The Baltimore school system has announced plans to close 26 school buildings in the next 10 years.

The city's school system announced the "10-year plan" on Tuesday.

The Baltimore Sun reports that it's part of a plan to overhaul the city's dilapidated infrastructure.

The plan also calls for replacing or renovating 136 school buildings and reducing the number of buildings from 163 to 137. The changes are planned to adjust to changes in population and increase the school district's utilization rate.

School officials say the plan is estimated to cost about $2.4 billion.

Baltimore city's school facilities are the oldest in the state.
