Md. Counties Mixed In Responding To New Growth Law

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- A Charles County official says the county is working to strike a balance between developing urban areas and preserving rural landscapes.

A Maryland environmental group says the county is one of several statewide where rural areas are at most risk of being developed.

A new state law creates a four-tiered system limiting where residential subdivisions on septic systems can be built and counties have until the end of December to draw growth maps. The environmental group, 1000 Friends of Maryland, says not all counties are meeting the law's requirements. And that is threatening rural areas.

Candice Quinn Kelly, the president of the Charles County Board of Commissioners, says the county has grown tremendously because of its proximity to Washington area, and county officials are working to comply with the law.
