BALTIMORE (AP) — The Maryland Department of the Environment says Philadelphia-based Sunoco and a suburban Washington water utility have been fined for alleged violations.

The department says the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission paid $55,925 for sewer overflows in 2011. The 163 overflows totaled nearly 1.8 million gallons in 2011, including an 847,000 gallon overflow. The WSSC said the 847,000-gallon overflow on Dec. 7, 2011 was due to heavy rains that overwhelmed pumps at a Fort Washington pumping station in Prince George’s County.  The department says the fine was paid to the Maryland Clean Water Fund.

Sunoco, meanwhile, has agreed to pay $50,000 to settle allegations that it failed to test an air pollution control device at a Baltimore gasoline terminal. The department says the terminal is now in compliance.
