BALTIMORE (AP) — Coleman Blackston’s two first-half touchdowns sparked Dunbar to a 39-0 victory over New Town in the 1A state title game Saturday afternoon. It was the Poets’ third straight crown and ninth championship overall.
Blackston was the focal point of the Dunbar (13-1) ground game from the outset, and he raced 25 yards for the Poets’ first score on their opening drive. He also scored on a 2-yard run in the second quarter and finished with 130 yards on 18 carries.
William Crest connected with Wilbur Young on a 13-yard scoring strike for Dunbar with 20 seconds left in the first half.
New Town (11-3), which reached the state final for the first time, crossed midfield several times in each half but failed to capitalize.
Three Titans turnovers led to 20 fourth-quarter points by Dunbar, whose 39-point victory margin was the third largest in the 39-year history of the state finals.
