Baltimore Woman Hospitalized After Police Say She Killed Her 2-Year-Old Son

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A 2-year-old was murdered and police say he was stabbed to death by his own mother.

Mike Schuh has more on what police say happened.

Police say the 32-year-old mother stabbed her little boy in the neck multiple times. Her mental health is now a key question in the case against her.

When police arrived at 1437 Broening Highway, they found the 32-year-old mother standing in a stairwell, holding a knife pointed at herself. Her 2-year-old son, Paris Russell, was dead on the floor from multiple stab wounds to the neck. She was then rushed to the hospital after she cut her own throat.

Neighbors are in total shock.

"You can't put it into words what it feels like," said Wilson Kalb. "It was rough."

"It's actually terrifying. I have two kids and I would never be able to hurt them," said Alicia Padgett.

"You need to get help for that if you know something's wrong with you, not take it out on your children," said Amanda Shackelford.

The little boy's aunt and uncle said his mother had been dealing with some mental health problems but no one in the family expected this.

Neighbors like Jim Pope say the mother could be frequently seen playing in the front yard with her son.

"He was a darling little boy. You couldn't just look at him one time. He was one of those kids," Pope said. "He was a nice looking little kid."

Police have not yet identified the little boy's mother, saying charges are pending and she will likely undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Police say once the mother is cleared medically, she will be charged with multiple crimes including first- and second- degree murder.

It's unclear who called 911 after the child died.
