ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) — Now that former Montgomery County Executive Doug Duncan is running for his old seat, political leaders in the suburban Washington County are waiting to see what current County Executive Ike Leggett will do.

Leggett initially said he wouldn’t run, but now says he won’t make up his mind until early next year.

Duncan left office to run for governor in 2006, but ended that bid when he was diagnosed with depression. He was popular during his 12 years in office. However, political observers say the county has changed, adding 90,000 voters. The 2010 census showed minorities now account for nearly 51 percent of residents.

Political observers told The Baltimore Sun that a Duncan-Leggett Democratic primary could force candidates for statewide office to pick sides.
