REISTERSTOWN, Md. (AP) — Maryland officials are asking residents of the lower Eastern Shore to report damage from superstorm Sandy, as the state appeals a denial of individual assistance by the federal government.

The state urged residents in Dorchester, Somerset, Wicomico and Worcester counties who sustained damage to their home or business to contact the Maryland Department of Human Resources Relief Hotline. The number is 888-756-7836.

The Maryland Emergency Management Agency says local, state and federal damage assessment teams are back on the lower Eastern Shore to make sure information about all damage is reported.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved federal funding for the state, local governments and certain nonprofits as part of a disaster declaration. The additional assistance sought by the state would support families and individuals.
