WASHINGTON (AP) — The board of trustees overseeing the Corcoran Gallery of Art has decided the Washington museum should remain in its historic building near the White House after studying a possible move for six months.

The board announced Monday that the museum will seek to stay in its Beaux-Arts building, which needs a $130 million renovation. The museum said the plan could include collaborating with another like-minded institution.

In June, the board began considering a move to sell the building and expand its college of art and design.

The group Save the Corcoran sprung up to protest the move. Members applauded the decision to stay and said the Corcoran should draw on its community support.

District of Columbia Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton says she’s overjoyed the museum will remain in Washington.
