BERLIN, Md. (AP) — Town officials in Berlin are exploring the idea of installing a wind turbine to help save money on energy costs.

The Daily Times reports town officials are considering the turbine for an electric substation on Schoolfield Street. Town staff were instructed to approach residents in the area with the idea to hear their reaction.

The 50-kilowatt turbine would be 65 feet tall with a wingspan of 40 feet. It would be unique in using a direct current generator to make the turbine more efficient.

The project is estimated to cost $125,000. The construction would be funded by electrical engineer Doug Richards. The cost to the town would be about $6,000 a year, but officials believe that would be recouped in energy savings.
