U.S. Sends $1M In Aid To Md. Victims Of Superstorm

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Officials say the federal government has sent more than $1 million in aid to Somerset County victims of Superstorm Sandy.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said Wednesday that it has received 619 applications for assistance since Dec. 14, when it reversed its denial of disaster aid to individuals. FEMA is continuing to process requests.

The Baltimore Sun reports that officials are urging residents to use care in spending any funds. Housing assistance grants may be used only for home repairs, short-term rental assistance or hotel expenses. Recipients are warned not to use the money for household bills, or purchases unrelated to the disaster.
