U.S. Attorney For D.C. Temporarily Moving To Md.
WASHINGTON (AP) -- U.S. Attorney Ronald Machen says he is temporarily moving out of the nation's capital and returning to his home in Silver Spring, Md.
Machen says he has no plans to resign or give up any duties. He says the lease on his Washington residence was not renewed.
Federal law requires U.S. attorneys to live in the districts where they serve, but the District of Columbia and the southern and eastern districts of New York are exceptions.
Machen's office is investigating Mayor Vincent Gray's 2010 campaign and the awarding of the $38 million contract to run the city's lottery. Numerous officials are under scrutiny. In the past year, two D.C. councilmembers have resigned after pleading guilty to federal crimes.
Machen tells The Washington Post his "work is not done."
