WASHINGTON (AP) — The D.C. Council will consider asking President Barack Obama to display the District of Columbia’s “Taxation Without Representation” license plates on his official vehicles.

The council will consider an emergency resolution Tuesday at its first meeting of the year. Councilmember Mary Cheh wants the council to pass the resolution ahead of Obama’s second inauguration on Jan. 21.

The city put the phrase “Taxation Without Representation” on its license plates in 2000 to call attention to its lack of a voting member of Congress. President Bill Clinton put the plates on his limousine, but his successors have not.

Cheh, a Democrat, says the council needs to unite and ask the president to carry the message of the district’s lack of representation to the rest of the country.
