WASHINGTON (AP) — District of Columbia leaders say they’ve received no promises from the White House about President Barack Obama placing the city’s “Taxation Without Representation” license plates on his official vehicles.

D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson and Councilmember Mary Cheh met Friday at the White House with David Agnew, Obama’s director of intergovernmental relations. The council passed a resolution calling on Obama to start using the plates in time for his inauguration. Mendelson says Agnew gave no timetable for a decision.

City leaders added the phrase “Taxation Without Representation” to standard-issue license plates in 2000 to call attention to the district’s lack of voting representation in Congress.

Mendelson and Cheh say the meeting was friendly and they discussed the president’s support for voting rights and the city’s strong support for Obama.
