Crisfield Wind Project Contract Awarded

CRISFIELD, Md. (AP) -- Construction of a wind turbine next to Crisfield's sewage plant could begin as soon as April following the award of a $3.2 million contract.

The City Council awarded the contract to Bearing Construction Co., which submitted the lowest of three bids.

Jason Loar, an engineer with Salisbury firm Davis, Bowen & Friedel, says he feels the project could be a pilot project for wind power on the Eastern Shore. The turbine would provide power to the sewage treatment plant, saving the city $150,000 to $200,000 a year.

The engineer told The Daily Times of Salisbury that construction is expected to take nine months. Loar says if the state's Board of Public Works approves the project at its March meeting, construction could begin after that.
