Tracking Hurricane Sandy

OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) — Restoration work has begun on an iconic pier in Ocean City that was damaged by Superstorm Sandy.

The Daily Times of Salisbury reports that workers have begun replacing missing deck boards and railings on the Ocean City Fishing Pier.

The next step will be to restore the pier to its full length of 489 feet. Charles “Buddy” Jenkins, who owns the Jolly Roger amusement park at the pier, is overseeing the reconstruction. The project is scheduled to be completed by summer.

Jenkins controls the pier under a franchise agreement with the resort town. Officials say the town has approved a design submitted by Jenkins for a fixed pier. There has been a fishing pier on the site since 1907, although it has been damaged by previous storms.
