Inmate Death After Assault Ruled A Homicide

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) -- Maryland State Police say an inmate has died after being assaulted at the North Branch Correctional Institution in Cumberland.

Michael Armstead, 53, died Jan. 9 at a Baltimore hospital, where he was taken after the Nov. 27 assault. Troopers say the medical examiner ruled his death was a homicide caused by a head injury.

Police say Armstead was assaulted as inmates were moving to the dining hall.

Troopers say another inmate is facing charges. Authorities did not identify him.
