Gas Leak Danger Ends In Hagerstown

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Authorities in Hagerstown say 28 people are returning home after a natural gas leak prompted their evacuation.

Washington County's emergency management agency said shortly before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday that the situation was stabilized.

A city spokeswoman says the residents were evacuated to a nearby nursing home for shelter from the frigid weather.

She says they were displaced from eight structures, mostly apartment buildings, in an area south of the downtown business district.

Wolfe says the leak was in a commercial building in the 200-block of Frederick Street. That street is also known as Alternate U.S. 40.
