Maryland Live! Casino Opens Dealer Training School

HANOVER, Md. (WJZ) — Get ready for blackjack, poker and other table games. Two months after Maryland voters approved expanded gambling, casinos are gearing up for a big change.

Adam May takes us behind the scenes.

Maryland Live! Casino opens a dealer training school while getting ready to add more than 100 table games to the casino this spring.

“I’d rather be behind the scenes dealing rather than playing and spending my money,” said Taysha Shaw.

Shaw is one of 600 in the class.

“These are good paying jobs. The majority of the folks will make $50,000 to $60,000 a dealer,” said general manager Rob Norton.

Al Forshini’s a head instructor.

“I’ve been doing this 30 years,” Forshini said.

From Vegas to Atlantic City, he looks and sounds like a casino boss.

“We’re looking for a smile, number one, a good personality and someone with a thick skin,” said Forshini.

Forshini told Adam May to give it a shot–and it’s not easy.

Cara Derose agrees, but can’t wait.

“It’s a lot different on the dealer end than the playing end. You have a drink, it’s fun…but now you gotta be thinking all the time,” she said.

Dealer training school is 12 weeks long. Then you have to pass a written exam and final interview before being offered a job.
