Cost Of Proposed Hospital In Prince George's Co. Rising

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The cost of a proposed new regional hospital in Prince George's County has risen to $650 million, and state and county officials say it could go higher.

The officials gave the new estimate Tuesday at a state Senate committee meeting in Annapolis. The increase was attributed to new cost estimates for equipment planned for the proposed acute care hospital.

The Washington Post reports the hospital and an affiliated network of doctors would replace the financially ailing Prince George's Hospital Center in Cheverly. The medical campus would serve Prince George's County and southern Maryland.

State lawmakers are deciding whether to approve $200 million for the project called for in Gov. Martin O'Malley's budget plan.
