CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) — Officials in Cumberland say they’re removing or pruning more than 50 trees that have either been damaged by storms or are at risk of toppling over.

Paul Eriksson, a natural resource specialist with the city, tells The Times-News that officials hope to be done by the end of March.

He says the city has pruned eight trees and is planning more than 50 removals of either the complete tree or stump.

He says some of the trees are at the end of their lives and others could fall onto power lines and knock out electricity.

The work follows a massive wind storm last summer that caused widespread power outages throughout the state, as well as October’s Superstorm Sandy.
