Hampton Heats Up To Defeat Coppin State 59-53

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Deron Powers scored 14 points and Du'Vaughn Maxwell had 10 points with 12 rebounds to lead Hampton to its third consecutive victory, 59-53, over Coppin State on Monday night.

Powers had nine points in the second half for the Pirates (8-13, 5-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference), who shot 52.2 percent (12 of 23) after halftime to the Eagles' 18.5 percent (5 of 27).

Hampton had an 18-6 second-half advantage on points in the paint against Coppin State (5-19, 2-7), which has lost four straight.

Taariq Cephas scored 10 of his 12 points for Coppin State in the first half, when the Eagles led by as many as seven points before Hampton came back to trail 30-29 at halftime.

Andre Armstrong scored 15 points and Michael Murray had 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Eagles, who stayed close by hitting 20 of 27 free throws to Hampton's 9 of 18.
