Bowie State Musicians To Honor Jazz Legend
BOWIE, Md. (AP) -- Student musicians from Bowie State University will perform the music of the late jazz saxophonist and arranger, Rick Henderson, in honor of Black History Month.
Henderson died at the age of 76 in 2004.
A Washington native, Henderson performed in Duke Ellington's Orchestra and led the Howard Theatre's house band.
The jazz great worked for decades as an arranger and composer for jazz orchestras, military bands, and school ensembles.
Officials say that Henderson's work influenced the sounds of legends such as Count Basie, Illinois Jacquet, and Billy Taylor.
The event takes place on the campus of Bowie State at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
