NewPage Cutting 44 Jobs At Md. Mill

LUKE, Md. (AP) -- Papermaker NewPage Corp. says it's cutting 44 jobs at its mill in the western Maryland town of Luke.

The Cumberland Times-News reports that the company announced the layoffs to employees Tuesday.

The Miamisburg, Ohio-based company says the job cuts are part of a company-wide workforce reduction of about 5 percent. It says the action affects both hourly and salaried employees. The company says the layoffs will be completed by the end of March.

NewPage employed about 870 workers in Luke as of Dec. 31.

NewPage President George Martin cites declining demand for paper as a factor in the company's decision.

NewPage emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in December.
