Medical Examiner Says Woman Died Of Natural Causes, Not Botched Abortion

GERMANTOWN, Md. (AP) -- The Maryland medical examiner's office has found that a 29-year-old woman died of natural causes after receiving treatment at an abortion clinic in Germantown.

The Washington Post reports that the office said Wednesday the woman suffered a rare complication related to childbirth in which amniotic fluid was pushed into her bloodstream.

The medical examiner listed two other causes of death. Aside from the amniotic fluid embolism, the woman also had a complication in which the body produces thousands of tiny blood clots. The office also listed "fetal abnormalities" in its preliminary autopsy report.

A spokesman for the office says it will take weeks to complete a more detailed autopsy report.

The clinic where the woman was treated has been the subject of frequent protests by abortion opponents.
