ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — A Maryland Senate committee is working late on a gun control measure.

Sen. Brian Frosh, the chairman of the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee, said Thursday evening it would be ideal to finish committee work on amendments and vote on the bill Thursday night.

The measure, which is a priority of Gov. Martin O’Malley this session, would ban assault weapons.

It also would strengthen handgun licensing laws by requiring fingerprints from people who purchase them. Supporters say that provision is designed to help prevent straw purchases, in which people buy guns for others who are not allowed to own them.
