BALTIMORE (AP) — Federal prosecutors say a Maryland man convicted in a multimillion dollar biofuel fraud case has been sentenced to nearly 13 years.

The U.S. Attorney’s office says Rodney Hailey, 34, of Perry Hall was sentenced Friday in U.S. District Court.

Hailey was convicted last year of selling $9.1 million of dollars in credits for biodiesel fuel his company didn’t produce, spending the money on cars, jewelry and property. He was also ordered to pay $42 million in restitution and forfeit property seized by authorities.

Oil companies are being required to produce renewable fuels such as biodiesel, made from vegetable oils, or purchase credits from producers of those fuels. The case was one of several nationwide that have unveiled problems with the program and led to calls for a congressional review.
