Deputy Shot In Hip When Weapon Fires Accidentally

BALTIMORE (AP) -- The Baltimore sheriff's office says a deputy was shot in the hip when a weapon accidentally discharged in a juvenile detention facility.

Lt. Carla Lightsey says the 20-year veteran was in serious but stable condition at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center following the shooting, which occurred about 8 a.m. Friday. The spokeswoman says the unidentified deputy was preparing to go on duty when the gun discharged.

Another deputy was in the room and was able to provide aid, but was not injured.

Lightsey says the shooting occurred at the Juvenile Justice Center on Gay Street. The spokesman said the shooting was under investigation and could not say whether the deputy was shot with his own weapon.
