UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) — The Prince George’s County Board of Education has begun interviewing candidates to hire a new superintendent for the school system.

The Washington Post reports the board began interviewing about 10 candidates for the top post on Friday. Former superintendent William Hite left last summer to take the top schools job in Philadelphia.

Alvin Crawley, the county’s interim superintendent, has applied for the permanent post.

The 123,000-student school system has experienced upheaval since Hite’s departure. Top administrators have left, including the chief financial officer, general counsel and director of student services.

According to the school system’s website, the school board is scheduled to interview and announce a list of candidates in the spring.

School Board Chairman Verjeana Jacobs has said more than 30 candidates applied for the position.
