Repairs Being Made After D.C. Area Water Main Break

ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) -- Repairs are being made to a water main that broke in Chevy Chase and resulted in water use restrictions.

Officials said that crews will remove a 20-foot section of the pipe and replace it with a new section Wednesday.

Mandatory water restrictions are now in place in Montgomery and Prince George's County after the break Monday, and the restrictions could last up to a week.

The break resulted in a geyser that shot water approximately 30 feet high.

Officials say business and residential customers should only use water as necessary. That means residents should take shorter showers, limit flushing toilets, put off washing clothing if possible and limit the use of dishwashers.

Officials say the affected water main went into use in 1980.
