Senate Approves Major Baltimore Schools Funding

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The Maryland Senate has approved a major Baltimore schools funding plan.

The Senate voted 40-7 on Friday for the measure. The Senate made some changes to the measure approved earlier this month by the House of Delegates that will be need to be approved by the House, but the changes are considered minor.

The funding plan will enable the city to issue about $1 billion in bonds. Supporters say that will help build 15 new schools and renovate up to 40 others.

The bonds would be made possible by funding from the state, the city and the city school system. They would contribute $20 million a year each for 30 years.

The Maryland Stadium Authority would oversee the financing under the measure.
