Kevin Cartwright Retires From Baltimore Fire Dept.

BALTIMORE (AP) -- The longtime spokesman for the Baltimore Fire Department has retired.

Chief Kevin Cartwright stepped down last week after 23 years with the department. He was its primary spokesman for the past decade.

Cartwright managed all external and internal communications for the department and was interviewed thousands of times by print, radio and television reporters. He was on call 24 hours a day and routinely responded to fire scenes late at night and in the early morning hours.

He also established his own private public relations firm, serving as president and CEO.

Cartwright says he's going to take some time off before starting a new endeavor in the fall.
