WASHINGTON (AP) — Maryland Sen. Ben Cardin is scheduled to meet with the family of the late Sergei Magnitsky.
Cardin, who is a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is scheduled to meet Thursday with Magnitsky’s mother, Natalya, and widow, Natasha in Washington.
Sergei Magnitsky is the namesake of the Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act.
The law was passed last year and named for the Russian lawyer, who was arrested in 2008 for tax evasion after accusing Russian police officials of stealing $230 million in tax rebates. He died in prison the next year, allegedly after being beaten and denied medical treatment.
