BALTIMORE (AP) — After nearly 35 years, the president of the Maryland Institute College of Art plans to retire.

President Fred Lazarus IV on Monday announced his plans to retire at the end of the next academic year.

Lazarus, the longest serving president of a four-year college in Maryland, informed the school’s Board of Trustees last week.

During Lazarus’ tenure, the school’s enrollment has more than doubled and 18 undergraduate and graduate academic programs have been added. The size of the campus has increased tenfold and the school’s endowment is 25 times larger than in 1978.

Lazarus helped found the Baltimore Design School and was instrumental in launching Artscape, a free arts festival anchored on campus.

A search committee will identify candidates for the new president in coming months.
