PASADENA, Md. (WJZ) --Police say the off-duty Bladensburg police officer believed to have died from injuries sustained in a wrong-way crash on Route 100 actually committed suicide.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore has ruled the cause of death as a gunshot wound to the upper body and the manner of death as suicide.

Anne Arundel County police say it happened just after 9 a.m. Saturday on Route 100  and Catherine Avenue in Pasadena.

Officer Brian Johnson was traveling on the westbound side of the road in a marked police car when he swerved into the eastbound lane and struck another vehicle.

He was later pronounced dead.

The other driver was treated and released at the scene.

Johnson, a nine-year veteran of the Bladensburg Police Department, was off duty at the time of the crash.
