ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Critics of Fort Detrick in Frederick are hailing a bill requiring closer scrutiny of cancer cluster investigations.

Gov. Martin O’Malley is set to sign the measure Thursday in Annapolis. It requires an appointed workgroup to examine the state’s process for investigating suspected cancer clusters.

The measure was supported by the Kristen Renee Foundation, founded by former Frederick resident Randy White. White believes his daughter Kristen’s fatal brain cancer was caused by chemicals the Army tested or disposed of at Fort Detrick decades ago.

The group pushed for a public health investigation that produced mixed findings in 2011. It found no evidence of a cancer cluster near Fort Detrick. But it also found a higher incidence of lymphomas within a mile of Fort Detrick than in Frederick County as a whole.
