BALTIMORE (AP) — A lawyer with the Baltimore City government who handles police department cases has been appointed as the department’s new head of internal affairs.

Rodney Hill replaces Grayling Williams, who left the department in March after about a year on the job.

Hill is a former Montgomery County police officer who rose to the rank of lieutenant before earning his law degree. He then worked as an assistant state’s attorney in Baltimore County and as a lawyer for Morgan State University. He joined the city law department last year.

While working for the city, he has prosecuted police officers in front of disciplinary hearing boards and handled other legal matters for the department.

Police Commissioner Anthony Batts says the department is fortunate to have found an in-house candidate for internal-affairs chief.
