PG Couple Sentenced In Case Of Woman They Employed

GREENBELT, Md. (AP) -- A Prince George's County couple has been sentenced to spend time in prison in a case involving a Filipina immigrant they employed for a decade.

The Washington Post reports Gloria and Alfred Edwards acknowledged bringing the woman to the United States under false pretenses and then taking steps to fraudulently obtain permanent resident status for her.

Prosecutors argued that the couple held the woman against her will and made her work 12 to 14 hours a day. A judge ordered the couple to pay at least $400,000 restitution because of how little they paid the woman.

The couple pleaded guilty to one count each of harboring the woman. Gloria Edwards was sentenced Tuesday to 12 months in prison. Alfred Edwards was sentenced to three months in prison.
