Unsolved Dog Abuse Cases: Thrown From Car, Starved To Near Death, Fatally Stabbed

BALTIMORE (WJZ) – In just the past week, three horrific cases of animal abuse were reported in Baltimore. The cases come as the city's own anti-animal abuse advisory commission released a damning report.

Monique Griego has more on who it's calling out.

The report slams several city agencies for not working together to stop animal abuse.

The calm, loving demeanor displayed by Queenie, a three-year-old pit bull, is a sharp contract to the way her owners treated her. Last Thursday, rescuers found Queenie confined in a basement, on the brink of death.

"These sores on her body are from being confined," said Lisa Morabito, from BARCS. "She obviously was being starved."

Queenie's is one of three cruelty cases brought to BARCS within the past week. Another dog was thrown from a car and a puppy died after being stabbed multiple times.

"How can people be so neglectful and cruel to animals?" Morabito said.

These cases come just as the mayor's anti-animal abuse advisory commission released a report slamming city agencies for a list of failures in stopping animal abuse.

Caroline Griffin, the former chair, is one of several people to resign out of frustration.

The commission, initially a task force, was created after the vicious burning of a pit bull named Phoenix. The case caused widespread outrage but the report says agencies like police and animal control aren't cooperating with the commission and flat out don't take animal cruelty cases seriously, treating them as minor property crimes.

In a statement, the mayor said she is reviewing the report closely and will be urging city agencies to address concerns raised. The city does not tolerate animal abuse.

"They need to take this seriously, not only for these animals that suffer tremendously but also because of remarkable correlation between animal cruelty and human violence," Griffin said.

Out of the three cases, one puppy died and the other two were accepted by other animal rescues.

If you'd like to help abused animals like Queenie, BARCS---the shelter responsible for taking them in---is always in need of donations.
