Md.'s First Lady Goes Glam In Baltimore STYLE Magazine

BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- Maryland's first lady, Katie O'Malley, goes glam. The city district judge appears on the cover of Baltimore STYLE magazine this month.

Jessica Kartalija has the story behind the photos.

We see Governor Martin O'Malley featured in the news or in magazines all the time. This time, it was the first lady in the spotlight.

Fashion editor Suzin Boddiford had a vision for the debut of the new style magazine.

"I wanted it to look very Vanity Fair, and elegant like how Vogue does celebrities," said Boddiford.

So she turned to longtime friend and Maryland's first lady Katie O'Malley.

"Instead of a model, how about a role model?" thought Boddiford.

That's when Katie O went glam.

"She is in a perforated leather jacket holding her politically correct little dog, just very modern-looking beautiful. She's the new first lady," said Boddiford.

Seven photos of the first lady, who prefers to be called Katie, at home in the governor's mansion are anything but traditional.

"She got up on the table, she was by the beautiful chandelier and I was like, 'We got it, it's magical!'" said Boddiford.

"She kicked off her shoes and she put her feet up and that was it," said Boddiford.

"I'm proud of her, and it was certainly an artistic side of her that people don't see when she is wearing a black robe on the bench," said her husband, Governor Martin O'Malley.

It wasn't all glamour.

"The man who was operating the smoke machine got a little carried away and at one point the whole mansion was covered in smoke," said Boddiford.

Not a problem for Katie. Once the smoke cleared, a great shot made the cut.

The photo shoot in Annapolis lasted the entire day, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

When asked how Katie thought she looked in the photos, she answered very modestly, praising everyone else and making no comment about how beautiful she looked.

The June issue of Baltimore STYLE is on store shelves now.
