WASHINGTON (AP) — The top Boy Scout executive in the council covering the District of Columbia and parts of Maryland and Virginia is supporting the national board’s decision to accept openly gay scouts.

Les Baron, CEO of the National Capital Area Council, says leaders in the Washington region will be examining the decision in the coming months to determine its impact. He says some members will be disappointed by the decision to accept gays.

But he says the decision allows the scouts to move forward with programs, including summer camps and educational initiatives.

In January, regional leaders pressured a Cub Scout pack in Cloverly, Md., to take down an anti-discrimination statement it had posted, challenging the ban on gay scouts.

Baron says there will be many challenges to resolve in the coming months.
