Baker Asks Prince George’s School Leader To Stay

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) — Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker is asking the interim superintendent of the county school system to extend his contract through the summer.

Interim Superintendent Alvin Crawley announced his resignation following Baker’s school system takeover. He was planning to leave June 3.

Now Baker tells WRC-TV that he is asking Crawley to stay until a new leader is in place.

The county is transitioning to a new governance structure to select its schools leader. Under the new process, Baker will receive recommendations from a three-member search committee appointed by Gov. Martin O’Malley. The county executive will then decide which person to hire.

Three candidates who had been vying for the top schools position, including Crawley, withdrew their names after Baker’s school takeover.
