Brittany Ghiroli from MLB.com joined the show to discuss Kevin Gausman’s first career start. The rookie went five innings and gave up four runs in a 12-6 loss to the Blue Jays.
Steve started out by asking Brittany about Gausman’s performance. Brittany cited the tough lineup the Blue Jays feature while discussing the flashes of greatness that Gausman showed during his first start. She was impressed with his start but thought overall the outing was very topsy-turvey.
Bob then asked about the bullpen struggles. Brittany cited Strope as a core bullpen guy that is really struggling. The bullpen is a major concern because there is a limited amount of flexibility in terms of guys you really cannot option. The team cannot do a lot of adjustments with their pen this year.
Steve then asked Brittany what the O’s options are. The MLB.com reporter responded by saying TJ Mcfarland, only a year older then Gausman, has actually pitched well and that they really need a long inning reliever. Brittany also brought up the fact that the team can always add one extra reliever to the mix and take out a bench player.
Bob then asked when Chen will be back in the rotation. Brittany said that Chen won’t even pick up a baseball for another week or so. She thinks that when all is said and done, Chen will be back around a month from now. With these types of things, you really just got to wait them out.
Brittany concluded by explaining her shock at witnessing the beer thrown at Nate Mclouth after making the diving play in the stands.
