Parents Complain About Inmates On School Grounds

CENTREVILLE, Md. (AP) — Inmates from an Eastern Shore pre-release facility will no longer be used to maintain school grounds in Queen Anne’s County following complaints by parents.

The Star Democrat of Easton reports that parents at Centreville Elementary School were upset that inmates were given supervised access inside the school during school hours.

The inmates were allowed inside the school on May 7 during a ceremony honoring teachers. County Superintendent Carol Williamson says the school principal told her he personally supervised the pre-release workers and that the students were nowhere near them.

County public works director Todd Mohn says inmates will continue to be used by the parks department but not to maintain school properties. He notes that all the inmates are nonviolent offenders.
