Parishioners In Northwest Baltimore Honor Rev. Dr. Harold Carter

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Parishioners of one Baltimore church are celebrating a life well lived. Their pastor, Dr. Harold Carter Sr., died last week.

As Gigi Barnett reports he worked for decades, impacting the Mondawmin neighborhood.

This is how members of New Shiloh Baptist Church in Northwest Baltimore remember their beloved pastor: with a mic in hand and sending a message of encouragement.

Rev. Dr. Harold A. Carter Sr. died last week. He was best known for leading one of the city's first "mega-churches," with more than 5,000 members.

This weekend, members of the church gathered for one large Sunday service to honor and remember Carter's life.

"He inspired me to want to do better because he was a man of excellence,"said Felicia Dawkins, New Shiloh member.

Dr. Carter was an active community and civil rights leader and talented singer.

Longtime member and former city school board member, Dr. Patricia Welch, says one thing that stood out about Carter was his love for children and teens.

"He always allowed the young people to have a voice. He wanted them not in a separate church, a youth church, a children's church. He wanted them in church," Welch said.

Right around from the congregation, Carter developed a family center and senior apartments. Parishioners say their pastor may be gone, but his work continues.

Members say Carter's influence was far reaching, even beyond the Baltimore community. He hosted a radio show that drew a national and international audience.

He was 76.

Carter battled prostate cancer for nearly 20 years. His funeral is set for Friday.
