Md. Zoo Euthanizes Female Leopard Who Had Cancer
BALTIMORE (AP) -- The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore says its 20-year-old leopard named Amari has been euthanized because of her declining health from cancer.
The zoo said Amari was euthanized Thursday morning.
Amari was brought to the zoo in 1995 from the Pretoria National Zoological Gardens in South Africa. She was a 2-year-old cub at the time and had been raised in Pretoria after her parents were poached.
Amari and the zoo's male leopard, Hobbes, produced two female offspring in 1997. In 2012, Amari was the zoo's Groundhog Day prognosticator. She correctly predicted an early spring by choosing a box decorated with spring images and filled with meat treats.
The Maryland zoo's chief veterinarian, Dr. Ellen Bronson, says Amari was diagnosed with mammary cancer which spread to her lymph nodes.
