Cleanup Begins After Low-End Derecho Barrels Through Md.

JESSUP, Md. (WJZ) -- The storms are gone, but they left behind a big mess. The high winds and walls of water packed an especially hard punch in certain areas of Anne Arundel and Prince George's Counties.

Gigi Barnett has the latest from Jessup.

The big question for neighbors now is, how much is all this damage going to cost?

The dark clouds, strong winds and pouring rain that rolled over parts of Anne Arundel and Prince George's County left behind a mess of downed trees in its wake.

"I was just watching outside. It was amazing," said Phil Slye.

And the cleanup is just beginning.

"Just a great big limb came off that tree back there. Probably about 25 foot long and probably about eight inches round. It broke it like a twig," Slye said.

The storm had its way with the trees and powerlines in Jessup, Anne Arundel County.

"These trees are a pain in the neck," said Bob Preston.

Homeowners like Bob and Betty Preston have done this kind of storm cleanup before. And they knew to take cover this time, too.

"Channel 13 kept saying it was going to to be bad, and so I believed them," said Betty.

They went to their basement for safety. When they came out, they found tree limbs strewn across their yard.

The storm hopped over many of their family and friends who live nearby.

"That's the way the storm usually does. It just goes through a strip," Betty said.

The cleanup continues now, but for emergency workers, luckily, they say nobody was injured in Anne Arundel or Prince George's County either.
